NetSuite is rarely the only system a company runs. It’s the hub, but around it sits a constellation of other tools: a Shopify or BigCommerce storefront, Salesforce for the sales team, a 3PL’s warehouse system, a payroll platform, maybe an EDI network for retail customers.

Every one of those connections is an integration decision. And the way you make those decisions determines whether your team spends its days doing actual work, or manually rekeying orders and reconciling mismatched records between systems.

We’ve built, fixed, and replaced a lot of NetSuite integrations over the years. Here’s the honest breakdown of your three main options, when each one fits, and the mistakes that turn integrations into money pits.

Why Integration Strategy Matters More Than People Think

Start with what’s at stake. A typical mid-market order-to-cash flow might look like this: an order comes in through Shopify, flows into NetSuite as a sales order, gets sent to a 3PL for fulfillment, the 3PL confirms shipment, NetSuite creates the item fulfillment and invoice, payment data flows back from the processor, and finance reconciles it all at month end.

When that chain is well integrated, it runs without anyone touching it. When it isn’t, humans fill the gaps. Someone exports orders to CSV and imports them. Someone updates tracking numbers by hand. Someone spends the first week of every month figuring out why the deposit totals don’t match the invoices.

Bundles and kit items, split fulfillments, unusual tax situations, custom fields that drive downstream logic, multi-subsidiary routing. Prebuilt connectors are opinionated by design, and their opinions may not match your operations. You often can’t see inside them when something goes wrong, and “it doesn’t support that” is a common support answer.

Verdict: genuinely great for simple, standard connections. Risky as the backbone of a complex operation, because you inherit the connector’s limitations forever.

Flexibility without full custom development. Need to route orders to different subsidiaries based on channel? Map a custom field? Hold orders that fail address validation? That’s configuration-level work on a platform like Celigo, not a development project.

One platform, many connections. Your Shopify integration, your 3PL integration, and your Salesforce integration all live in one place with one monitoring pane, instead of three unrelated tools maintained three different ways.

The tradeoffs: subscription cost that scales with usage, and a real skill requirement. Celigo is far easier than raw development, but designing reliable flows, handling errors properly, and mapping data correctly still takes expertise. A poorly built Celigo flow fails just as effectively as poorly written code, only with a nicer interface. Option 3: Custom Development (SuiteScript and RESTlets)

Sometimes nothing off the shelf fits. There’s also a NetSuite-specific trap worth naming: governance and concurrency limits. NetSuite meters script usage and simultaneous API connections. Custom integrations built without respect for those limits work fine in testing, then start failing at scale, precisely when the business can least afford it.

How to Actually Decide

Cut through the vendor noise with five questions:

  1. How standard is the process? Standard flow, standard data: consider a prebuilt connector. Mostly standard with real exceptions: iPaaS. Genuinely unique: custom.
  2. What are your volumes, now and in two years? High and growing volume favors platforms with robust error handling and monitoring.
  3. Who will maintain it? No internal technical team means avoiding bespoke code you can’t service.
  4. How bad is failure? For business-critical flows like orders and fulfillment, monitoring and retry capability aren’t nice-to-haves. Weight them heavily.
  5. How many integrations will you eventually need? If the answer is three or more, a platform approach almost always wins on total cost, even if the first connection costs more upfront.

Most mid-market companies end up with a sensible mix: a platform like Celigo carrying the core commerce and fulfillment flows, a native connector where one happens to fit perfectly, and custom work reserved for the truly unusual. Designing that mix deliberately is most of the battle, and it’s the heart of what good NetSuite integration services actually provide: not just building pipes, but choosing the right kind of pipe for each connection and making the whole system observable.

The Bottom Line

Integrations are infrastructure. Like all infrastructure, they’re invisible when done well and expensive when done badly.
